Why does my site look different on other computers?

Screen Resolution and Browser Info

Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Safari... all display your site in a slightly different way since they can't agree on how to translate html... This highlights the importance of having a site using HTML that passes w3c validation (or at least come close). If it doesn't pass at all then there will probably be problems for some people viewing you site.

You can see if your site is using valid HTML and passes validation with this website:

And these are the current stats on what users are...er... using! (February 2007)

BROWSERS
Internet Explorer 6 -- 42.3%
Internet Explorer 7 -- 13.3%
Firefox ------------------- 31%
Safari (mac) ----------- 1.7%
Internet Explorer 5 -- 3%
Mozilla ----------------- 1.5%
Opera -------------------- 1.5%

SCREEN RESOLUTION
1280 x 1024 (and higher) ---- 26%
1024 x 768 ----------------------- 54%
800 x 600 -------------------------- 14%
Mobile Web and Unknown ---- 6%

So you can see Internet Explorer currently has the largest market share however this figure is shrinking! Internet Explorer 6 is notorious for its bugs when reading HTML but also for its HUGE security flaws. For these reasons many people have downloaded the Firefox Browser.

Personally I use Opera (GO OPERA!!! Highly recommended!) though I have installed every browser so that I can compare how my websites work on each of them. If you are concerned you should probably do the same.

Screen Resolution is also important to note. obviously the average screen size is getting larger but there are still a suprising amount of people still using 800 x 600 screens!
